Belajar Bahasa Inggris yu!! Eh tapi.....

Belum lama ini teman-teman CFBE membahas mengenai pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di SD-SD di Indonesia. Nah ternyata, kemarin saya menemukan suatu keanehan di dalam Buku Bahasa Inggris seorang murid kelas 4 SD. Buku ini berjudul “Joyful Learning English for Elementary School, Book 4”, diterbitkan oleh Penerbit Pelita Ilmu, Bandung

Tampaknya yang membuat buku sama sekali tidak memahami Bahasa Inggris, dan ia membuat buku yang isinya tidak bermutu dan menyesatkan. Dari teks book yang seperti inilah murid-murid Indonesia belajar Bahasa Inggris. Jelas aja ke depannya bakal ngaco…

Di dalam bab terkhir, terdapat suatu wacana, beginilah isi wacananya:

This is my classroom. I study with my friends everyday. There are many things what we need to learn. A blackboard, a cupboard, a teacher table, and a teacher chair. That is a box and books on teacher table. The content of box are thirty piece of chalks and books are twenty. I have twenty four friends, thirteen girls and eleven boys. Each student in our class room has a table and chair. There are twenty five student table and twenty five student chair in our classroom.

Oke sekarang coba kita baca wacana di atas secara keseluruhan. Apakah wacana tersebut punya makna? Kalimat yang satu tidak berhubungan dengan kalimat yang lainnya.

Tolong koreksi bisla saya salah, setahu saya, seperti halnya dalam Bahasa Indonesia, dalam Bahasa Inggris kita mengenal istilah induksi atau deduksi ketika membuat suatu paragraf.

Misalnya, kalau menggunakan deduksi, kalimat

There are many things we need to learn .

Akan diikuti kalimat

We need to learn Mathematics, Literature, and Art.

Bukan oleh

A blackboard, a cupboard, a teacher table, and a teacher chair.

Agar lebih bermakna mungkin wacana di atas dapat dituliskan seperti ini:

This is my classroom. In this classroom, I study with my friends’ everyday. Here, we study English, Indonesian, Mathematics, and Art.

Selain itu, kumpulan kata-kata:

A blackboard, a cupboard, a teacher table, and a teacher chair.

bukanlah sebuah kalimat karena tidak ada subjek maupun predikatnya. Setahu saya, dalam bahasa Inggris, suatu kalimat setidaknya harus mengandung setidaknya sebuah subjek dan sebuah predikat.

Lebih tepatnya, kalimat tersebut ditulis sebagai

There is the teacher’s desk, a blackboard, and a cupboard in my classroom.

Kalimat :

That is a box and books on teacher table.

Strukturnya salah, seharusnya:
On the teacher’s desk, there is a box and some books

The content of box are thirty piece of chalks and books are twenty.

Seharusnya:

There are thirty pieces of chalks in the box, while there are twenty books on the desk.

I have twenty four friends, thirteen girls and eleven boys.

Seharusnya:

There are thirteen girl and eleven boy students in my class. Overall, there are twenty four students in my class.

Each student in our class room has a table and chair.

Karena pada awal cerita, si penulis menggunakan kata my, maka seharusnya dalam kalimat-kalimat berikutnya juga digunakan kata my bukan our, sehingga kalimat di atas seharusnya:

Each student in my classroom has a table and a chair.

There are twenty five student table and twenty five student chair in our classroom.

Seharusnya:

There are twenty four student tables and twenty four student chairs in my classroom.
